This musical is the winning entry in a competition organised in 2016-17 by the Schools Music Association of Great Britain (SMA) (part of The Incorporated Society of Musicians) (ISM).
“With touches of humour throughout, yet not shying away from deeper emotions, Sarah Baker’s script will appeal to the young performers themselves and to their audiences. Her music is eminently sing-able, memorable and varied. We think that this work will appeal equally to boys and girls and be easily within the grasp of any primary/middle school.” ISM-SMA Judging Panel

The Backwater Pirate and His Hairy Chest
In a time before the invention of the camera and the motor car, Vidal Lagoon and his band of pirates roam the high seas and make a living, not by plundering and pillaging, but by … HAIRDRESSING! There is scope here to include large numbers of children playing the parts of Pirates, Townsfolk and Mermaids and opportunities for wild hairdos and colourful wigs! The humour throughout will appeal to those performing, as well as their audiences. You may already have guessed that this work contains many moments of humour, appealing to both boys and girls, but also explores issues to do with loneliness, bereavement, being true to oneself, as well as providing opportunities for the cast to ‘let their hair down’.

Synopsis
An idyllic life on the ocean waves is shattered by a terrible storm. Vidal and his two babies survive, and they are washed up in the sleepy port of Backwater, where, given shelter in return for free hairdos for life, by health and safety freak Vanessa, Vidal adopts a land-based lifestyle and continues to create outstanding hair-art. But the storm claimed his beloved wife Karine; he misses her and longs to be back on the water – however, his children’s safety must come first.
Some ten years later, despite being a success, Vidal is at his lowest and Karine appears to him in a dream, leaving behind a key. In the meantime, his children (no longer babies), longing to know more about their father’s past life, eventually learn of his former fame as a stylist extraordinaire afloat. With the aid of the Mermaids, they find the HAIRY CHEST, and open it by means of Karine’s key. It contains all the evidence of Vidal’s tonsorial creations while at sea, and encouraged by his children, who are longing for adventure, Vidal decides to resume his former life on the waves. Everyone, including Vidal’s own crew, townsfolk, other pirates and the Mermaids are overjoyed – all except Vanessa, who realises that her free hairdos are a thing of the past!

The Dragon's Tale - story book with CD

Price: 6.99

by Ann Bryant
A great way for children to enjoy classical music, this fabulously illustrated book features the legend of George and the Dragon but with a new ending. The exciting story has been specially written to 'match' the popular music of the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Simply play the CD straight through and read the story at the same time, following the CD counter references on each page.

This is the tale of a dragon,
And also the tale of a man.
The man's name is George - he's a hero.
And me - I'm the dragon. I'm Dan . . .
